Andrew studied optometry at Melbourne University graduating in 1978. The wilderness and waterways of Tasmania enticed him south in 1979.
He has always had a strong interest in how the eye and vision work and how to make best use of residual vision in eye disease. As well as practising optometry at Total EyeCare he is the senior consultant optometrist at the Tasmanian Lions Low Vision Clinic at the Royal Hobart Hospital. He enjoys working with people with rare and complex eye conditions to find the best ways to improve their vision.
Andrew completed a postgraduate diploma in Advanced Clinical Optometry in 2001 and was in the first group of Tasmanian optometrists to be endorsed to prescribe therapeutic drugs for eye conditions in 2002.
Another interest close to Andrew’s heart has been eyecare in the developing nation of East Timor. Andrew is a regular volunteer as part of the East Timor Eye Program. In 2010 Andrew was awarded a Melvin Jones fellowship award by Lions International for his outstanding work with people with low vision and for his overseas volunteer work.
Outside of optometry Andrew plays Underwater Hockey and enjoys kayaking around the coast of Tasmania. Andrew and his wife Andrea have three children.
